Packaging Database

As part of a sustainability initiative, the Brookline FLL Team The Hexbots made a Packaging Database which helps small businesses easily find more sustainable packaging alternatives. They have listed common materials used for packaging and then provided links to websites with a sustainable version of that material.

Aluminum Foil to Beeswax wrap

Aluminum Foil takes around 400 years to degrade in the trash and cannot be composted.

Why switch?

​Beeswax wraps are made from the earth and 100% biodegradable in backyard compost so there is no need to recycle or throw away. It is made using 4 organic materials. It is also easily reusable.

Styrofoam to Green Cell Wrap

Styrofoam takes 1-5 MILLION years to degrade in the trash, and many types aren't recyclable.

Why switch?

Green Cell Foam is more sustainable because it is made of corn. If you put it in your mulch pile, it can turn in to mulch. You can put it in water and it will dissolve. It can reach a very good range of temperatures.

Bubblewrap to Corrugated Bubble

Bubblewrap takes 10 years-1,000 years to degrade and it is not recyclable.

Why switch

Corrugated bubble is more sustainable because it is 100% recyclable and 95% is post consumer waste content. It is also naturally biodegradable and can be customized for any size.
